Junior Preparatory Weekly Memo

16 August 2024

Dear Parents

What better way to end the week than with a show. The Grade Threes had a great trip to the Artscape to attend an Afrikaans show. The magic key began to glow and took Kipper and his friends on an adventure to Paris, to the Olympics. The Olympic torch went missing and it was up to Kipper to return it so that the Olympics could begin. What a fun filled show with singing and dancing ( even some break dancing ). The Grade Three learners displayed awesome theatre etiquette and made us truly proud!

Grade 1R presented the message about kindness in assembly on Monday. We are very proud of them and especially those who were brave enough to read in front of the whole school. Wow!

Teaching and Learning

Academic Reports

Learners continue to complete both formal and informal assessments throughout the quarter on a regular basis to improve their knowledge, understanding or skills. They will receive a report at the end of this quarter, which reflects codes and a comment from the class teacher.

In the next few weeks, the teachers will share their calendar with you to book a report feedback meeting. Feedback meetings will take place between 9-12 September.

This quarter in Robotics our youngest learners in Grade 1 and 2 explored the basics of coding with Scratch Jr, creating interactive stories and games that introduced them to sequencing, loops and events. Grade 3 learners took their learning to new heights with LEGO WeDo, building robotic arms, garbage trucks with tilting mechanisms, and fishes with flapping tails, allowing them to understand basic engineering principles and the mechanics of movement.

Across the Preparatory Faculty we continue to explore different ways to make learning more exciting and meaningful.  Project-based learning remains a priority in the Preparatory and teachers in all grades are focussed on setting projects that challenge learners to think critically about a topic or problem, encouraging them to share their knowledge or provide solutions to the problem.

Our littlest learners have been exploring different types of occupations but more specifically, how different occupations rely on each other. During their outing to Rosen Castle, they were able to role play occupations working together.

The Grade 1s recently delivered fantastic oral presentations about their chosen career. they shared what they want to be when they grow up and highlighted the tools used in those professions. YouTubers, doctors and dancers remain popular occupations for the future of our Grade Ones. Their enthusiasm and creativity made for an inspiring showcase of their learning journey.  Just look at this go-kart racing driver, fashion designer and paleontologist, aren't they fabulous!

It’s been wild and wet in our Grade Two classrooms as our learners became designers and engineers! They designed water catchers, collected items to build it and invited a parent into the classroom, to be an assistant and help build their designs. The parents had the hardest time not taking over! The water catchers were put to the test in a recent winter downpour.

We’ve had to bring our Grade Threes back down to Earth as they have been exploring Space! They had an interactive hands-on lesson on the sun's rotation from Mr. Duffield from our Secondary Campus and designed launch badges, each with its own special message.

They also collaborated in groups to design their own planets...

I so enjoyed listening to the Grade Threes singing in isiXhosa, and just had to share this beautiful singing.

Soccer

Our U9 boys played soccer against Kings School on Monday and won 6-0. Well done to the team and especially Munashe who was the Player of the Match. This team has grown from strength to strength and so far this season, has only lost one game. Keep up the great work, boys!

Rugby

Our U9 rugby boys played Blouberg Ridge on Wednesday and despite a great effort and a close final score, we lost 4-3. Well done to Mntungwa who was Player of the Match. We are proud of how well they are playing as a team. Keep up the great effort, boys!

Netball

Our U9 netball girls played Elkanah on Wednesday. Both teams played at the same time and demonstrated amazing sportsmanship, putting into practice everything they have been learning. The coaches said that their defence and shooting were brilliant. The one team drew 3-3  and Amarachi was Player of the Match. The other team won 11-0 and Tiana was Player of the Match.  Well done on these absolutely amazing results, girls!

Hockey

The U9 girls played a hockey match yesterday against Curro Century City and won 5-0. The girls played a feisty game, attacking at every opportunity they got.  They also played as a team and communicated well. Skyleigh is the Player of the Match. Well done on this fantastic result!

The U9 boys played a match against Rallim on Thursday last week. The boys played an exceptionally exciting game with enthusiasm and determination. They played their hearts out to the bitter end and won 9-7. Well done, this certainly was a game to be proud of.  The Players of the Match were Zach and Maxwell.

The U9 girls also played Rallim last week and fought hard. The rain, wind and cold weather didn’t stop them and we couldn’t be prouder of our girls. They came back fighting and the final score was 3-2 to Rallim. Lauren Lee was Player of the Match. Well done girls!

Library News

ROALD DAHL BUNTING

Thank you to the Book Club for the beautiful bunting, featuring their favourite Roald Dahl stories. This week we listened to the “missing chapter” from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that was axed from the book before publication, and members spoke about their favourite Dahl stories, which was so inspiring to hear.

WHAT ARE WE READING?

This week we have started introducing a Roald Dahl book to our younger children that many of them do not seem to know yet. It was published in 1991, shortly after Dahl's death in November 1990. Billy is a little boy who lives on the edge of a dark forest, and his mum has forbidden him to ever go out the garden gate. So, one day, that is exactly what he does. In the forest he meets the Minpins, tiny people who live in hollow trees. They live in fear of a terrible creature, the Gruncher, and Billy must find a way to finally defeat the terrible beast. The children are immediately charmed by the fabulous Dahl words, as Billy’s mother warns him about whangdoodles, hornswogglers, snozzwanglers and vermicious knids. Totally irresistible!

BIRTHDAY BOOKS

There is a heartwarming Parklands tradition that on our birthdays we share a gift with our friends by donating a book to the library.

On Monday Fynn presented his Birthday Book at the assembly. It is book 11 of the popular Bad Guys series and was taken out on the same day!
