Junior Preparatory Weekly Memo

30 August 2024

Dear Parents

We had a wonderful cake sale today and would like to thank our fabulous Grade 1K and 1R parents for the delicious treats sent in and for hosting the cake sale, which they managed to turn into the most wonderful spring celebration with flowers and treats galore.  What a fabulous Friday Treat.

This year we have collected R5500 from cake sales and have chosen to donate the money to Friends Day Centre.

               https://friendsdaycentre.org.za/

This is a Non-Profit Organisation and care facility for up to 120 learners with severe and profound disabilities. It is situated on the grounds of Alexandra Hospital in Maitland, Cape Town. The Centre provides appropriate education, personal skills development and an array of therapies for learners. The Centre accommodates learners from different communities, suffering from various and / or multiple disabilities, including cerebral palsy, spina bifida and epilepsy, among others. The aim is to enhance their quality of life, encourage a degree of independence and give them the chance to live a relatively normal life. The Centre provides parents with the peace of mind that their special needs child is being cared for during the workday.

This week our Grade Twos presented a wonderful message in assembly about water and the importance of saving it. They also gave us all some great tips on how we can use water sparingly.  They were very confident and spoke beautifully in front of the whole school. Thank you for the wonderful message, Grade Twos!

We would like to thank our Sports, Robotics and Culture Departments who once again hosted a Takeover Day for our Grade 1-6 learners to enjoy. Our Grade 1s and 6s partnered up to delve into Technology in the Makerspace. Our Grade 2s and 5s got physical on the sports field and the Grade 3s and 5s enjoyed being movie makers and creating movies using green screening. The same learners have been partnered together with their “buddy” for the whole year and it has been wonderful to see the friendships blossom. Our Grade 1s certainly looked up to and forward to their time with the Grade 6s, they have been wonderful role models.

Learners continue to complete both formal and informal assessments throughout the quarter on a regular basis to improve their knowledge, understanding or skills. They will receive a report at the end of this quarter, which reflects codes and a comment from the class teacher.

The teachers have shared their calendar with you to book a report feedback meeting. Feedback meetings will take place between 9-12 September.

The Grade Ones had great fun in Maths sorting smarties into colours, adding different colours together and doubling. They also had fun designing their own smartie boxes.

GRADE 2

The Grade Twos had great and delicious fun making sandwiches while at the same time learning about fractions.

The National Sea Rescue institute (NSRI) came to visit the Grade Twos today and discussed the very important topic of Water Safety.

LIBRARY NEWS

SANDI AND THE SALTY SEA DOGS

What a memorable experience our Grade 1 - 4 learners had this week when they met a charming border collie who now also is a book character! Sandi and two of her pups live an adventurous life exploring the False Bay ocean with their owners, Monique and Chris Fallows, who have been involved in eco-tourism and research for the past twenty five years.  The new book documenting the dogs’ interaction with sea animals in this region, also includes fascinating information on the ecosystem and explains it in a way that children can understand. We saw amazing videos that are actually included in the book through QR codes and can be accessed through scanning with their iPads.

BIRTHDAY BOOKS

This week birthday wishes are extended to Tanishq, Casey-Lee and Sophia, and we are looking forward to reading their interesting Birthday Books. Tanishq brought Ice Planet Adventure from the popular Geronimo Stilton series. From the Babysitters Series, Casey-Lee is donating Karen’s School Trip which is a great story about a class trip to the zoo. Sophia is sharing an intriguing fantasy, complete with moving castle and a scary wizard. What a treat! Thank you so much for these lovely books!

AN UNUSUAL GIFT

The enterprising Wickham family tried an unusual experiment in which an old book was crystallised. The end result was quite spectacular and it will now reside in our libraries for the children to admire and be inspired too. You are welcome to pop in and admire it up close.
