Junior Preparatory Weekly Memo

26 July 2024

Dear Parents

The Grade Ones had such fun listening to the author, Kayla Diamond, on Thursday.

Our authors are the special people who make the magic happen, and we are always delighted to welcome Kayla Diamond back to our school. As an experienced teacher, she just captures the attention of our little readers and not only makes her stories come to life, but shows the children how the lessons apply to their own lives. This time we listened to her share her first book, Glow, and were reminded of the importance of discovering our own special qualities, rather than comparing ourselves to others. Children also received some valuable tips on how to grow their own stories.  Grade 1 learners will have brought a pamphlet home with information on how to acquire these special books for your home library.

We also had a suprise treat this week when the very special characters from the Wizard of Oz visited us..

Thank you

GENERAL SPORTS INFORMATION

In addition to the sport selected, the Grade 3s will join the Grade 4s on a Friday and attend a compulsory sport training session that forms part of their school day. This will take place on the Junior Preparatory campus and will end at 14:30 in time for collection.

Grade 1 and Grade 2 learners may wear their sports kit to school on their two Grade sport days as well as their PE Day. Grade 3 learners may wear their sports kit to school on their PE day as well as on a Friday for the new sport training session. Grade 3 learners are to bring their sports kit to school in the navy drawstring bag, for their sport days. The learners will change at school before their chosen sport.

Sport Days

Grade 1: Tuesday and Thursday
Grade 2: Monday and Wednesday
Grade 3: Friday

Unless otherwise communicated, the Grade 3 learners who have signed up for hockey will play on the Astroturf at Sandown every Friday during sports hour (13:30 - 14:30) and every Monday (14:30 - 16:00) during practice time. They will be transported to and from the Secondary Faculty back to the Junior Preparatory Faculty.  Gum guards and shin pads must be worn.

We would like to assure parents that winter sports will continue each day as scheduled, especially if there is only light drizzle.  In the event of extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rain, indoor sports will be arranged instead. Our coaches will engage the learners with field/court placements and strategies to ensure that their development and enjoyment of the sport continues uninterrupted.

Library News

The Space Race

Our Grade 3 learners are having an exhilarating quarter exploring the wonders of Space. In our libraries we have books that are used to access augmented reality, which provide an interactive experience that brings the learning material to life.

This week we used the Space Race app from a book with the same title, which allows us to experience the fascinating history of space exploration and the race between the superpowers to be the first to launch a man into space, land a man on the moon and the current exploration of Mars. They took a closer look at detailed 3D spacecraft models and watched videos of actual NASA footage.

Birthday Books

Birthdays are the best and we love celebrating with you!  Happy birthday and thank you to Luhle, Cian and Amarachi for sharing wonderful books with us all. You can never go wrong with Julia Donaldson and The Gruffalo’s Child is a firm favourite. The Investigators is a new graphic novel series and this one is titled Heist and Seek, an irresistible adventure. With Roald Dahl Day happening this quarter, James and the Giant Peach is also a great choice. We will treasure these gifts!
