Junior Preparatory Weekly Memo

19 July 2024

Dear Parents

The mornings have been cold but this week we were treated to a beautiful sunrise over the Junior Preparatory.

We have enjoyed our first full week back at school and had a wonderful day on Thursday celebrating the life and work of an amazing man, Mr Nelson Mandela.

I love what Mr Mandela said about our children...

Our children are the rock on which our future will be built, our greatest asset as a nation. They will be the leaders of our country, the creators of our countries wealth, they will be those who care for and protect our people.”

Thank you to all the families who donated two tins to enter our JP on the run event. We collected 370 tins of food. In line with the theme of Nelson Mandela Day, we will be donating the tins of food to Early Childhood Development Centres in our area.

Celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela even extended into our Robotics lessons.

Grade 1P, 1R, 1K and 1L enjoyed a wonderful outing to Rosen Castle this week and learnt about various occupations which fits in beautifully with their work at school as well as their Project Based Learning (PBL) this quarter. They shopped, filmed, and role played being doctors. What fun! The Grade 1A's look forward to also enjoying this experience on Friday 2 August 2024!

The Grade Ones have learnt so much already this year and are now reading confidently. They are even constructing and writing their own sentences using capital letters and full stops. We are very proud of them.

Damon wrote about Rosen Castle and drew a very detailed and creative picture. Well done, Damon!

In the theatre patrons who give donations to stage a show are called Angels. Sometimes Angels provide cash, goods or services and without their generous contributions the show would go on but without the sparkle that we have come to expect at a Parklands College Musical production. We would like to extend our gratitude and to offer recognition to those individuals and companies that have been so generous in their support of our production of The Wizard of Oz.

Special mention goes to Grant Smee and Megan Ladbrook from Only Realty for their donation towards the set. As Dorothy says at the end of the play, 'There is no place like home', let Grant and his team find you your next home, this is a company with a big heart.

Just as Dorothy needed to realise that everything she ever needed was in her own backyard, the fabulous Zondagh family behind the companies Veldskoen and Plakkies have donated 23 pairs of their fabulous shoes to the show. This company is offering a discount to all of the Parklands family through a QR code and we hope to see their comfortable Veldskoen on everyone's feet. They have a large range of shoes, including school shoes, that are all 100% locally manufactured. Driekie and the team are proudly South African and their success story is one that inspires. They are a company with heaps of courage and boy, has that paid off for them! Buy a pair or two, you won't want to wear anything else.

Last but by no means least, we have to mention our fantastic set building Angel Derek Rocher, a man with an enormous brain, who translates my sketches and drawings into safe structures for the show to be performed upon. Derek gave up two weeks of leave from his job as Display Manager for Shoprite/ Checkers to create  the elaborate set for The Wizard of Oz in record time. The learners assisting him have learnt a great deal of practical skills that he generously imparted, earning him the title of Dearest Derek from the crew.

Thank you to these very special people for their amazing contributions to the show, we are very grateful and we can't wait for you to see the show that you have helped create.

With Gratitude

Overview of JP and SP Sport for the quarter

Quarter 3 Match Schedule U9-U13

GENERAL SPORTS INFORMATION

In addition to the sport selected, the Grade 3s will join the Grade 4s on a Friday and attend a compulsory sport training session that forms part of their school day. This will take place on the Junior Preparatory campus and will end at 14:30 in time for collection.

Grade 1 and Grade 2 learners may wear their sports kit to school on their two Grade sport days as well as their PE Day. Grade 3 learners may wear their sports kit to school on their PE day as well as on a Friday for the new sport training session. Grade 3 learners are to bring their sports kit to school in the navy drawstring bag, for their sport days. The learners will change at school before their chosen sport.

Sport Days

Grade 1: Tuesday and Thursday
Grade 2: Monday and Wednesday
Grade 3: Friday

Unless otherwise communicated, the Grade 3 learners who have signed up for hockey will play on the Astroturf at Sandown every Friday during sports hour (13:30 -14:30) and every Monday (14:30-16:00) during practice time. They will be transported to and from the Secondary Faculty back to the Junior Preparatory Faculty.  Gum guards and shin pads must be worn.

We would like to assure parents that winter sports will continue each day as scheduled, especially if there is only light drizzle.  In the event of extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rain, indoor sports will be arranged instead. Our coaches will engage the learners with field/court placements and strategies to ensure that their development and enjoyment of the sport continues uninterrupted.

Library News

THANK YOU TO OUR PUBLISHERS

On Tuesday three of our book besotted library staff attended a presentation by Penguin Random House, our local publishers. These wonderful people do not only get excited about books like we do, but they are our first port of call for making contact with authors to visit our school. They also provide information on new publications every six months which is so valuable for planning our library programme and book shopping. Children’s literature is a vast industry, with Young Adult books being the fastest growing genre worldwide.  We were blown away by the sheer number of new books expected for the next few months.

During the past week, the JP library has acquired Raven and Rover, the gorgeous creation of Dr. Dino J. Martins, a well-known Kenyan artist and biologist. His exquisite illustrations are printed on glossy paper, and the story is an ode to the fascinating and endangered African Wild Dog.  In the SP the Lottie Brooks series is one of the current favourites, and our readers will be excited to hear that two more books will become available in the next six months. How fabulous are those cute biscuits! It was also exciting to meet author Monique Fallows, who spends many months each year on a boat with three dogs! She and her husband are involved in conservation and photography, and her first children’s book, which is about the adventures of her dogs, is going to be a great favourite in our libraries. She has also agreed to visit our school, so we will keep you posted.

VISITING AUTHOR

We are delighted to once again welcome Kayla Diamond on Thursday, when she will be introducing her books and reading to the Grade 1 and R learners. Kayla is a seasoned teacher and brilliant with our little people. Please see the order form in your weekly consolidation slides, which will enable you to order the books from Kayla’s website. You will also be able to order books after the event.

 BIRTHDAY BOOKS

Congratulations to all the boys and girls who recently celebrated their birthdays. We really appreciate being part of the festivities and sharing the books you have chosen with such care.

Thank you to Lucy for The King Bird, hilariously funny and wonderfully illustrated by Tony Ross. Leon-Matthew is donating the first Percy Jackson book, The Lightning Thief, a firm favourite and must-read! Peyton added another copy of the sought after Astrochimp, which makes the waiting time shorter for everyone! Ben is adding two all time favourite characters, the impossible Horrid Henry and fascinating Geronimo Stilton. Lucas has been living in the Alex Rider world recently and is contributing a copy of the brilliant prequel, Russian Roulette. What a feast! Thank you so much!

Congratulations

Congratulations to Mrs. Nadia Rabe and her husband on the birth of baby Justin. He was born on Thursday 18 July and is doing well. We hope he will be an amazing blessing in their lives.
