Junior Preparatory Weekly Memo

7 February 2025

Dear Parents,

This week we celebrated World Read Aloud Day in a special way. We were delighted to have so many parents join us in the school gardens to read aloud to the learners. It was heartwarming to see the joy on their faces as they listened to captivating stories.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

Grade 3 Outing to the Aquarium

Our Grade 3 learners had an exciting and educational outing to the Two Oceans Aquarium, where they had the opportunity to explore the fascinating marine life, learn about ocean conservation, and witness the beauty of our underwater world up close. The learners thoroughly enjoyed the interactive exhibits and left with a greater appreciation for the ocean and it's creatures.

World Read Aloud Day

What a magical time we enjoyed on World Read Aloud Day! The power of stories was palpable as we gathered on picnic blankets in our beautiful garden to get swept away to a fantasy world. We have so much appreciation for all the parents who arrived with picnic blankets and storybooks and made the magic happen. This year's theme was to create positive experiences for children through reading and stories and the challenge is to keep the reading going once the occasion is past. Thank you for contributing to the Nal'ibali aim of reading to 3,5 million South African children.

Happy Birthday Annastacia!

The Junior Preparatory gathered outside before break to surprise Annastacia for her birthday. We celebrated her with a song and learners presented beautiful handmade cards to wish her for her birthday.  We are incredibly grateful to Annastacia ('second mother' to our learners and Head Housekeeper) and her team, for all they do for us and especially our learners.

Writing Activity in Grade 3A

Last week, Grade 3A collaborated on a shared writing activity. They learnt about the great elements of a story, planned a story and then wrote it together. Let us know what you think!

A week in Grade One.mov

Grade 1 - 'I want to Learn!'

Kicking off the year with curiosity, Grade One learners were asked what they want to learn in 2025. Their responses were filled with enthusiasm and excitement, sparking thoughtful discussions about their goals and what they are looking forward to this year. From exploring new subjects to setting personal milestones, our young learners are already embracing their Grade One Journey with an inquisitive mindset. We can’t wait to see where their curiosity leads them!

Grade 2A, Miss Labuschagne’s class, enjoyed writing all about themselves.

LIBRARY NEWS

Visiting Author: Riaan Manser

Adventure stories are great, but meeting an adventurer in real life is just the greatest. We could think of nothing better to inspire everyone on Friendship Day, Friday 14 February,  than a visit from our favourite explorer, Riaan Manser, as he shares his latest book, My First Frozen Adventure.

In this adventure, Riaan and a friend, Dan Skinstad, who faces the challenges of cerebral palsy every day, kayaked around Iceland. They braved icy seas, fierce storms, an active volcano and achieved another world first! We will be swept away by their tale of friendship and teamwork under challenging conditions.

My First African Adventure was chosen as the book of the year for 2024. These books impart information in a fun and interactive way, as every chapter has a QR code that opens pictures and videos to explore.  We highly recommend these books for parents and children to share.

Bargain Books will kindly provide books that can be purchased on the day, and the prices are as follows:

I WILL READ HERE OR THERE, I WILL READ EVERYWHERE!

We are loving the stories behind the Extreme Reading entries and will share some of these exciting pictures every week. Please keep the photos coming!

SPORT

FROM THE SPORTS DESK

A Great Start to the Season!

Sport at Parklands College Prep is in full swing, and the energy on the courts, fields, and in the pool has been nothing short of inspiring. Our learners have embraced the new season with enthusiasm, showing incredible commitment and growth in their respective disciplines. Sports practice has brought an exciting atmosphere as all learners engaged in Softball, Cricket, Tennis and Swimming strengthening skills, teamwork, and passion for their sport.

Yours in sport,

Bubble Time!

Grade 1s enjoying a swim basics 101 PE session!

The learners wet their faces and proceeded to blow bubbles! We are certain to see these little ones go on to be a part of our galas in the near future!

The Week That Was: A Celebration of Sport & Growth

This past week at Parklands College was filled with personal growth, team spirit, and outstanding performances across all sporting codes.

PE Swimming Making Waves
Our PE swimming programme has been in full swing, with learners showing incredible progress and personal growth in the pool. Whether refining technique, building confidence, or simply taking that first step into the water, it has been inspiring to witness every learner’s journey. Check out the pictures from the PE swimming session.

Sports in Action
This week saw all learners actively engaged in Softball, Cricket, Tennis and Swimming, embracing the opportunity to refine their skills while enjoying the camaraderie that sport brings. Our softballers were disappointed when their fixture was cancelled, but our cricketers played on Thursday, narrowly losing to Generation by 5 runs. The player of the match goes to Just Hoekert for displaying phenomenal striking with the bat.

Looking Ahead:

We’re gearing up for another action-packed week of sport with Mini Cricket, T-Ball, Tennis, and swimming. Our learners are ready to hit the courts, fields, and pool once again, bringing their energy and enthusiasm to every match and practice.

A special highlight this week is our Open Day on Saturday, 15 February. We’re inviting the U9 Cricket families to experience the spirit of Parklands sport with a U9 Cricket session with Coach Liam and Coach Jared. This session will run from 10h00 - 11h00 - don’t miss out!

Looking ahead, 22 February marks our first Mini Cricket Festival of the year, hosted at Van Riebeeckstrand Primary. Keep an eye out for match day notifications and get ready to cheer on our young cricketers as they take to the field!

Here’s to another week of growth, teamwork, and sporting success. Let’s keep the momentum going! 🎉🏏🎾🏊‍♂️
