Junior Preparatory Weekly Memo
14 November 2025
14 November 2025
Dear Parents
We have had a full week on campus. Last weekend we saw so many of our U8s and U9s shining bright on the cricket field as we hosted our annual Mini Cricket Festival. Mini-Cricket is the starting point for every aspiring cricketer and is designed to ensure every participant is given an opportunity to bowl, bat, field and explore what they enjoy most about the game.
We are very proud of all the players for their enthusiasm and hard work and loved our parents' positive and wholehearted support. It was a wonderful opportunity to assess skills while building confidence, teamwork, and celebrating our young cricketers.
“A coach will impact more young people in a year than the average person does in a lifetime.” Billy Graham
I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our coaches and team managers for their dedication to not only developing our children's cricket skills but, more importantly, for nurturing their self-esteem and building their confidence. Your positive influence in our little people’s lives is very much appreciated!
As our U9 players look forward to joining the Senior Preparatory in 2026, and our U8s prepare to lead Junior Prep as the new "seniors," we know that these early experiences will play a key role in shaping their love of the game while developing their skills.
See our sport section for photographs and details of the festival.

Santa's Shoebox Drop off
A group of learners joined Mrs De Aguiar to deliver our Santa Shoebox gift donations. A heartfelt thank you to our Parkie community for their generosity. Together, across the whole of the Preparatory, we donated 58 Santa Shoeboxes!
This week in Junior Chefs, it was all about apple and carrot muffins! Yum! A few learners chose to add raisins as an extra sweet treat. We have a feeling that the muffins did not last very long ... they smelt delicious whilst baking.
R10 will be billed to your account to support this worthy cause. Wear your PE clothes and your funky socks. We can't wait to see your funky socks.
Our Junior Preparatory learners continue to complete both formal and informal assessments throughout the quarter. These are done during the school day and under the care of their teachers.
Learners must meet the minimum requirements set by the Department of Education in order to progress to the next grade:
Home Language: English - Code 4 average throughout the year
Mathematics - Code 3 average throughout the year
First Additional Language: Afrikaans/isiXhosa - Code 3 average throughout the year
The Department of Education also requires learners to have attended school regularly and doctor’s notes given to school when absent for two days or more.
At this time of the year, some of our prolific children’s authors often surprise us with a holiday treat. David Walliams never disappoints. His latest book, Santa & Son, arrived this week and we cannot wait to start reading. It is the night of Christmas Eve, and a robbery is underway in Londinium, the most famous toy shop in the world. The shop’s Santa and his son are locked inside with the robbers, which could have something to do with the grumpy elves? Can our heroes stop the bad guys by using just the toys in the shop as weapons? Pogo sticks! Bouncy balls! Remote-controlled helicopters! Bubble guns! Slime! Slinkies! Stink bombs!
David says that as a boy, the highlight of his year was travelling to London with his parents for a few days before Christmas, and visiting the enormous toy shops was an unforgettable treat. The learners have received a book on their iPads with a variety of activities from the publishers, and we are also asking them what they would choose from Londinium, the fantastic toy shop from the novel.
This is a funny and heartwarming story from the king of comedy for the whole family to enjoy.
Stocktaking Ahead!
Our libraries will close next Friday, 21 November, for the annual stocktaking, although lessons will still continue and reading and activities will be provided on Book Creator. Please return all books that may still be at home by Friday.
Grade 2 Book Review Orals
It's been loads of fun hearing about all the different books available. Our Grade 2s were tasked with presenting a book review to their class. Watch out, Mrs Crouse! You will be having many more learners visiting to take out some of the suggestions.
Grade 3 "Mondeling"
Afrikaans is the name of the game in Grade 3, where learners have presented a 'mondeling' on their favourite sport!
Grade 1 Art:
Woollen Lizards
The Grade 1s have been working on a 3D art project, sculpting lizards from wool. They carefully crafted their creatures, making some parts thicker and others thinner to capture the look of a real lizard.
Teacher Nikki received some fun creations in Lego! Learners had to build any creation of their choice, then decompose it into at least 8 building steps. And what appeared … 6 - 7 of course!
Grade One Orchestra in Action!
Enjoy this delightful video of our Grade One Orchestra performing during their Friday morning rehearsal.
These young musicians have been working hard to develop their ensemble skills, and their enthusiasm for making music together shines through in every note!
A celebration of teamwork, spirit, and smiles at Parklands College.
What a spectacle! This past Saturday, Parklands College hosted its annual Mini Cricket Festival, and what an incredible morning it was for our young sporting superstars! The festival was filled with fun, laughter, and great sportsmanship as our budding cricketers showcased their developing skills and teamwork.
A special highlight of the day was the surprise visit from our First Team Cricket squad, who not only came to support but also joined in the fun for a friendly mini match against our U9s. To the delight of everyone watching - and much to the First Team’s embarrassment - the U9s claimed a memorable victory in that encounter..... surely!?
A huge thank you to all parents, guardians, and learners for your energy, support, and enthusiasm that made the morning such a success.
In the pool, our U9 swimmers shone brightly at the Edgemead Gala, delivering exceptional performances and making Parklands proud. It was the perfect way to wrap up an outstanding season of galas for the year.
As our sports programme begins to wind down for the quarter, we want to express our appreciation to every athlete, coach, and family for contributing to a short but action-packed quarter. Thank you for another fantastic sporting season!
"Our enthusiastic Under 8 cricket players had an exciting morning at the Mini Cricket Festival on Saturday, 8 November. They showcased great teamwork, sportsmanship, and growing confidence on the field. It was wonderful to see their smiling faces as they batted, bowled, and fielded with so much energy and enjoyment. The day was filled with laughter, learning, and a shared love for the game - a true celebration of cricket and friendship!" - Mrs Duke
PE AND SWIMMING
We're back in the Pool!
Please remember to pack your Parklands swimming costume, Parklands swimming cap, towel and if you need, goggles and come dressed in your PE attire!
Please take note that although coaches guide and support learners during swimming in Physical Education lessons, we are not a Learn to Swim School and for their own safety it is critical that learners are water safe and able to swim. Please liaise with the coaches if you need contact details for LEARN TO SWIM schools for your child to attend.
Our U9 Softball team took to the field against Cannons Creek in what proved to be an exciting and hard-fought match. The team displayed great determination and teamwork throughout the game, showing real improvement in their fielding and batting.
Despite a 9–13 loss, the girls never gave up and played with wonderful spirit and enthusiasm. A special mention goes to Lima, who earned Player of the Match for her outstanding effort and consistent energy at bat and in the field.
Well done, girls - your positive attitude and sportsmanship continue to make the College proud!
