ACADEMICS
Throughout the quarter, our Junior Prep learners continue with their formal and informal assessments. These are carefully integrated into the school day, ensuring your child feels supported and comfortable in their familiar classroom environment.
For a learner to successfully progress to the next grade, the Department of Education requires the following averages throughout the year:
Home Language: English - Code 4
Mathematics - Code 3
First Additional Language: Afrikaans/isiXhosa - Code 3
Regular attendance is equally important for academic growth. As per Department guidelines, a medical certificate is required for any absence of two days or more.
LIBRARY
Request
Many years ago we invested in the Billie B. Brown book series that came to us from Australia. The stories are great, the font friendly and large and these books play an important part in easing our readers into their first adventures in chapter books. Later we met Billie’s best friend, Jack, and added the Jack series to our collection. Sadly we have now reached the stage that these books are not available anywhere anymore. Occasionally we find one or two at a second hand shop. Our books are still in constant use, but some of our copies are looking tired and we are unable to replace them. We want to ask that, if you have any of these at home that you are not using anymore, if you would consider donating them to the library, where they will be welcomed and treasured. Thank you for your support of our libraries.
Book Club
The Book Club had fun this week with a Sketchnoting quiz, where they were introduced to the magic of Sketchnoting, which is a form of visual note-taking. Using the basic elements of Sketchnoting allows everyone to create images that are powerful aids in memory retention when studying. However, our focus is firmly on having fun with books. The learners had to follow a sketch until they could guess what they were drawing, and then they had to identify the character from a well-known book. Happiness!
2026 Library Challenge
We are entering the final week of our challenge and still there is a steady stream of lovely photos coming in. Please enjoy them with us.
We’re teaming up with Fallen Angels to support animals in need by collecting cat and dog food. Every bag or tin of food donated shows how small actions can make a big impact.
Let’s keep the momentum going and prove that when learners work together, we can create real change — one paw at a time. 🐶🐱💙

CAKE SALES
Classes will all have an opportunity to host a cake sale and there is much excitement as the children eagerly look forward to this treat. Cake sale money is used to support various outreach projects.
We request that items such as cupcakes, popcorn, crisps, muffins, etc. are sent in by the classes that are hosting the cake sale. Please ensure that items donated for cake sales do not contain nuts. We love healthy goodies, especially popcorn!
Parents are welcome to send the year's money in advance to be kept safely locked away (i.e. 6 cake sales x R10=R60.00) or send in R10 on cake sale days.
If you are able to assist at your class cake sale from 09h40, please notify your child’s class teacher.

Please read through the Parent and Learner Directory, which includes important information about Parklands College and the Junior Preparatory learners.
What a week it’s been! We’re already into our third week of sport, and it’s been incredible to see how far our learners have come in such a short space of time. Confidence is growing, skills are sharpening, and match awareness is improving week by week.
Selected U9 squad swimmers are gearing up for another exciting Parklands College Gala on 6 March. The commitment shown at training has been fantastic, and we’re looking forward to seeing them take to the pool with determination and pride.
On the fields, our U9 Softballers are now in their third week of matches, while our Cricketers are into their second week of fixtures. The progress across both codes has been noticeable - from improved teamwork and communication to growing resilience in competitive moments.
Our U9 Softballers also have one eye firmly on the upcoming Softball Tournament on Saturday, 7 March, hosted at Parklands College. It promises to be a wonderful day of participation and exposure for our learners.
And of course, our Grade 2 and Grade 3 learners are building towards one of the highlights of the quarter - our much-anticipated Splashtacular, taking place at the very end of the quarter. The excitement is already building!
There is still plenty to look forward to this quarter, and the journey continues. Thank you to our parents and supporters for your ongoing encouragement and involvement - we see you, and we hear you. Your support plays a vital role in the growth and enjoyment of our young athletes.
Here’s to another strong week of learning, participation, and sporting spirit!
This is an early reminder to check that your child has the correct items for hockey and rugby that will take place in quarters 2 and 3.
Another action-packed week for our Junior Prep learners, as our U9s continued to gain valuable match experience on the softball field.
Match 1:
Lost 9–11
A tightly contested game that kept everyone on the edge of their seats! The girls showed great determination and resilience right until the final innings.
Player of the Match (Batting): Lillabet
Player of the Match (Fielding): Minnie
Match 2 vs Riverside College:
Won by 16 runs
A fantastic team performance with confident batting and improved communication in the field.
Player of the Match: Zanthe
What continues to impress is the growth in confidence, teamwork, and understanding of the game. Each match is an opportunity to learn, improve, and most importantly, enjoy the experience.
Well done to our U9s for representing Parklands College with enthusiasm and pride!
Age: U9s
Venue: Parklands College Junior Faculty

Sport Days (during the school day)
Grade 1: Tuesday and Thursday from 1-2 pm
Grade 2: Monday and Wednesday from 1-2 pm
Grade 3: Monday 2-3 pm, Friday 07:30-08:30
Sports Kit
All learners may wear their sports kit to school on their two Grade sport days as well as their PE Day.
Swimming during PE in Quarter 1 and 4
Please pack Parklands Swimming costumes / Parklands Swimming Cap / Towel and sunblock.
Although coaches guide and support learners during swimming in Physical Education lessons, we are not a Learn to Swim School, and, for their own safety, it is critical that learners are water-safe and able to swim.
Please liaise with the coaches if you need contact details for LEARN TO SWIM schools for your child to attend.
SPORTS AND MATCHES
Sport in the younger grades is developmental, and our programme is designed to build the foundational skills needed for various sport. Our Grade One programme uses fun games to build strong, healthy bodies and develop fundamental skills.
Ad hoc internal/external matches begin in Grade Two once the Sports Department has determined that learners are adequately prepared and all safety considerations have been met. Game selection is rotational to give as many learners as possible the opportunity to develop their skills and get “a little taste” for the game. Key players will be selected for festivals.
The Grade Threes will have opportunities to participate in internal/external matches. We will field an A Team, while our B Teams will be selected using a rotational basis. This approach allows as many learners as possible to develop their skills and experience playing the game. The A Team will primarily participate in festivals, and we will enter additional teams where possible.
Junior-level sports (Mini cricket, hockey, netball, rugby, softball) have specific rules set by associations which are different to the rules of the various codes in the older age groups. The goal is to allow children to try different positions and build a wide range of skills before specialisation begins in Grade Four.
If your little one has excelled in a sport outside of school, we would love to celebrate their achievements. Please use the link below to fill in the external achievements form to make us aware of their shining moment.
➡️ EXTERNAL ACHIEVEMENTS ⬅️
Marais competed in his very first Nipper competition, and what a debut it was. His club finished an impressive third overall, with Marais contributing valuable points thanks to strong performances in both the sprints and board events.
