Junior Preparatory Weekly Memo

6 March 2026
Dear Parents
Above: Lorraine and Werner Roth Above Right: Founding Educators: (Back L-R) J. Booysen, L. Davies, L. Steynberg (Nee Greenway), J. Armstrong, R. Knaggs (Director), G. Douglas, A. Bailly, N. Muller (Front L-R) H. Kreyenbroek, R. van der Merwe, P. O’Brien, L. Ribaudo and L. Torbet. (Highlighted names denote staff who are still with us).
We will be celebrating our 46th birthday on Wednesday, 11 March and on this day in 1980, Lorraine Roth, opened the doors of Christopher Robin Pre-Primary School to the residents of Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard. The quality of education provided brought about a well – patronised and respected establishment, which offered care and early learning to young children, aged from six months to six years.
The reputation and quality of the school continued to grow and numerous requests by parents, for the Pre-Primary to offer formal education began. Encouraged by the staunch support of parents we were prompted to search for land to grow the school’s academic offering. As a result of a thorough research process, the Western Seaboard was identified as a potential major growth area. This was further supported by growth and population statistics from the City of Cape Town’s Planning Department. The construction of Parklands College commenced in 1998 in the new suburb of Parklands and in July of the same year, proudly opened the doors of the new Campus in Raats Drive, to 32 learners.
The College was built in phases, in order to accommodate the growth in learner numbers. The window period provided during the construction phases enabled the College to acquire additional land for sports and future developments. Parklands College currently operates from three sites, on approximately twenty-six and a half hectares of land. The growth of the College and Pre-Primary required careful strategic planning, and a decision to develop a new campus for the existing Secondary Faculty was formalised by the Board in February 2010. Parklands College, at 1 College Avenue, opened its doors in January 2012.
The College continues to grow as a result of the outstanding education and foundation our learners receive in our Pre-Primary and we are proud of what has been made available, in order to enrich their academic, cultural and sporting interests. We look forward to providing many more years of outstanding innovative education, beginning in the early years. The success could not have been achieved without the outstanding support we have received from our parents.

Thank you so much to the Grade 3K & 3R parents who supplied delicious goods and assisted at the cake sale today. We had a bumper turnout of special helpers and are so grateful for your time.
Along with the sweet treats and happy buzz of the morning, the cake sale supports our outreach programme and R2 035 was raised. Later in the year we will share which charity will be gifted with the cake sale proceeds.
Please sign up for Q2 and Q3 co-curriculars. All sign-ups must be in by Wednesday, 11th March.
Please note that Junior Chefs and Design Society require a quarterly sign-up.
IMMUNISATION
ACADEMICS
Throughout the quarter, our Junior Prep learners continue with their formal and informal assessments. These are carefully integrated into the school day, ensuring your child feels supported and comfortable in their familiar classroom environment.
For a learner to successfully progress to the next grade, the Department of Education requires the following averages throughout the year:
Home Language: English - Code 4
Mathematics - Code 3
First Additional Language: Afrikaans/isiXhosa - Code 3
Regular attendance is equally important for academic growth. As per Department guidelines, a medical certificate is required for any absence of two days or more.
REPORT FEEDBACK MEETINGS
Reports will be released on Monday, 23 March, and we’ve set aside 23 – 25 March for our report feedback meetings. This is a wonderful opportunity to sit down together, celebrate your child’s strengths, and look at how we can support their continued growth. We encourage you to book a slot via the Google Calendar links provided by your child’s teacher. Appointments are usually 15 mins in length. We greatly value our parents’ and teachers’ time and urge parents to be on time in order to ensure that other parents are not kept waiting. Please contact your child’s class teacher directly should you be unavailable to meet on the specific days and times scheduled.

LIBRARY NEWS
Happy Birthday, Dr Seuss
On Monday we paid tribute to a beloved author whose children’s books feature in most children’s lives when learning to read. Theodor Seuss Geisel was a children’s author, illustrator and political cartoonist who wrote more than 60 of the most popular books of all time.
After the Second World War, he focused on children' s books that would encourage children to read. Children’s books were boring and uninspiring, and he set out to change things. In came wacky characters, amazing new words, a limited vocabulary and lots of rhyme and repetition which made reading a breeze. As the saying goes, the rest is history. Thank you for the magic, Dr. Seuss.
FUN FACT: Did you know that Dr. Seuss created the word “nerd”?
Some sound advice for living from the master:
📙 You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax. All you need is a book.
📙 Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are seeds. You can grow flowers, or you can grow weeds.
📙 Step with care and great tact. And remember that life’s a great balancing act!
📙 You’ll miss the best things if you keep your eyes shut!
📙 It is not hard to make decisions once you know what your values are.
📙 I like nonsense. It wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living.
📙 You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose!
📙 The more that you read, the more you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go!
Book Club
ALL WINNERS!
The Book Club members were introduced to a stash of fascinating books through an exhilarating game of Bingo. Unicorns, aliens, sports stars, books-to-movies, superheroes, we love them all!
Birthday Books
Happy birthday to Keziah who turned 7 this week! This well known book provides a solid “recipe” for children who struggle to fall asleep at night. Just follow the prompts as you read and your little person will relax and drift off peacefully. Just be warned: so may you! Thank you so much for this lovely Birthday Book, Keziah.
THANK YOU!
Thank you to each and every one of our Parklands families for your donations for Fallen Angels. It has been amazing to see the love and care that you have shown for the dogs and cats of the shelter. We know that when we deliver the food items the staff are going to be very grateful that the animals will have another few meals and full tummies. We have one more week left for donations.
In the final two weeks of the quarter, we will be collecting marshmallow eggs / boxes / strips or individual packs. These will be shared with senior citizens in our community as well as our neighbouring schools. We would love you to be part of sharing opportunities as we get closer to Easter time.
Every small donation makes a difference!
What’s in a Name? Grade One’s PBL Journey of Discovery
Last week, our Grade One classrooms were alive with energy as each learner stepped into the spotlight to reveal the "why" behind their name. Our young researchers became "identity detectives," interviewing families to uncover the deep roots and heartfelt meanings of their names. We discovered that every name is a vibrant thread in our school's rich tapestry.

Parents are welcome to send the year's money in advance to be kept safely locked away (i.e. 6 cake sales x R10=R60.00) or send in R10 on cake sale days.
