Junior Preparatory Weekly Memo
29 May 2026
29 May 2026
The grey skies this week, have not dampened enthusiasm in the Junior Preparatory. We have had a full week of sport, learning, an outing for our Grade 3s and much playing outside.
ACADEMICS
Throughout the quarter, our Junior Prep learners continue with their formal and informal assessments. These are carefully integrated into the school day, ensuring your child feels supported and comfortable in their familiar classroom environment.
For a learner to successfully progress to the next grade, the Department of Education requires the following averages throughout the year:
Home Language: English - Code 4
Mathematics - Code 3
First Additional Language: Afrikaans/isiXhosa - Code 3
Regular attendance is equally important for academic growth. As per Department guidelines, a medical certificate is required for any absence of two days or more.
REPORT FEEDBACK MEETINGS
Reports will be released on Friday 19 June and feedback meetings are scheduled for Friday 19 June, Monday 22 June and Tuesday 23 June.
This is a wonderful opportunity to sit down together, celebrate your child’s strengths, and look at how we can support their continued growth. We encourage you to book a slot via the Google Calendar links provided by your child’s teacher. Appointments are usually 15 mins in length. We greatly value our parents’ and teachers’ time and urge parents to be on time in order to ensure that other parents are not kept waiting. Please contact your child’s class teacher directly should you be unavailable to meet on the specific days and times scheduled.
RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS
Ashlyn, Kayla, Ayanda, Feramni and Marley in Grade 3 have been working hard on creating a Recycling Group. They have met at break times, collaborated on ideas and been creative in making a video encouraging everyone to recycle!
We are so proud of these girls for the initiative they have taken.
Thank you to Mrs De Graeff and Mrs Crouse for all their support too!
SLIPPER DAY
What a lovely way to end the week ... in slippers! Thank you to everyone for supporting a wonderful initiative.
A HEALTHY SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT
With the change in season and colder weather, we see an increase in illnesses. Any child who is unwell or taking antibiotics must stay at home. We appreciate that this can be challenging for working parents, but preventing the spread of infection to other learners and our teachers remains our priority.
Cape Town, South Africa - Former NASA astronaut, educator, and STEAM advocate Dorothy “Dottie” Metcalf-Lindenburger will visit South Africa for the Space Tour 2026, running from 22 July to 4 August 2026 across Cape Town, Gauteng, Durban, and selected remote communities.
As part of the Cape Town leg, Metcalf-Lindenburger will headline a public presentation evening at Parklands College on Monday, 3 August 2026, from 18h00 to 20h30, a rare opportunity for learners, families, and educators to hear directly from a NASA astronaut about life in space and the future of exploration.
Tickets: Book here on Quicket
Presented in partnership with Living Maths, the tour will bring world-class STEM inspiration to schools, universities, science centres, and communities nationwide, including underserved and remote areas where learners often lack access to global role models.
Metcalf-Lindenburger flew aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on the historic STS-131 mission to the International Space Station in 2010, serving as Mission Specialist 2 and robotic arm operator. The mission delivered over 27,000 pounds of equipment to the ISS and travelled 6.2 million miles during 238 Earth orbits. She was also part of the first occasion on which four women were simultaneously in space. A former earth science and astronomy teacher, she was selected by NASA in 2004 through the Educator Astronaut Program and was the first Space Camp alumna to join the Astronaut Corps. She later commanded the NEEMO 16 underwater exploration mission and today champions STEAM education globally through Dottie ML, LLC.
Steve Sherman, Chief Imagination Officer of Living Maths, said the tour is about possibility. “When young people in South Africa meet someone who has travelled beyond Earth, it changes the way they think about their futures. Curiosity and talent are universal, opportunity is not. This tour is designed to help bridge that gap.”
Metcalf-Lindenburger added: “Science and exploration thrive when young people are encouraged to ask questions, solve problems, and imagine boldly. I’m honoured to share experiences from space exploration, teamwork, and discovery with audiences across South Africa.”
Tour Dates: 22 July – 4 August 2026

We are excited to announce that Parklands College Secondary Faculty will be hosting a Space Educators Conference during World Space Week in October.
As part of our Ria Abel outreach this quarter, each grade has a target of collecting 100 items. We only have one week left and would really appreciate any donations or contributions to help us reach our goal. Any little bit will make a big difference.
If you have spare Woolies bags, please send them in for us to package the items. ♥️
GRADE 3 OUTING
As part of FAL and SAL this quarter, the Grade 3 learners visited the Secondary Campus Culinary Department, where they learned about cupcake baking and ingredients while expanding their Afrikaans vocabulary. They also enjoyed icing and eating their own cupcakes in the recreation room. Thank you to Mrs Torbet and Mrs Grobler for making this a memorable experience for our Grade 3s!
LIBRARY NEWS
Tintin
While our Grade 1s and 2s are still lingering in Elmer’s world, filled with lovely stories and activities, the Grade 3 classes have taken their first steps into the exciting life of the iconic reporter, Tintin, and his canine companion, Snowy. Georges Remi (pen name Hergé) completed 23 graphic novels which have lost none of their appeal, now nearly 100 years later.
It is fascinating that Tintin landed on the moon, and that the books feature advanced technology like colour television, many years before these were even conceived. Classes were introduced to the characters and discussed the unique challenges of completing a graphic novel of such detail by hand, which included painting every picture. It's hard to imagine a world without technology if you can do these tasks so easily on your iPad!
The Book Club made a start on completing a “Tintin Passport” which consists of riddles and mystery messages to solve and required great teamwork.
Thank you to the Book Club for these lovely Elmers.
Mrs Manickum's class: Elmer Day colouring-in!
Birthday Books
We wish Shamiso Ndudula, Lillabet and Shamiso Chigiga wonderful birthdays and thank them for selecting such beautiful books to celebrate with all of us. Shamiso in Grade 2 brought an animal picture atlas, an amazing resource that introduces us to remarkable animals all over the world. Every page is worth exploring! Lillabet is starting off a new series for us with A Magical Birthday in the Unicornia series. All about glitter, unicorns and friendships, this is a winning recipe for all our young girls. Shamiso Chigiga is donating everyone’s favourite, the magical Matilda, as well as a tiny Chicken Licken, just for fun. What a feast!

CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHTS
In Grade 1 we have been learning about the value of money. Grade 1R created catalogues for their imaginary shops on Book Creator and we used our cutout paper money and went “shopping” at our friends’ shops.
The Grade 3s made their own sunshine this chilly week! We revised our -ly suffix words by creating gorgeous suns with our phonics words on the rays. We love using our creativity during English lessons!

Can you believe we have already zipped into June? Winter is officially here, but the action on our sports fields is just warming up. We have a massive weekend ahead, followed by an important update regarding our sports schedule for the rest of the term.
Tomorrow is the big day! Our campus doors are wide open for Open Day, and there is no better way to show off our incredible school spirit than through our young athletes.
Our Junior Prep sports stars will be putting on a fantastic showcase, and they want you in the crowds.
What’s on show: U9 Junior Rugby and Netball
Time: Tomorrow morning from 10h00
Whether you are a current parent, a prospective family, or just a passionate supporter, please pop down, grab a coffee, and cheer on our future champions. Let’s make some noise on the sidelines!
As we move past the first week of June, our seasonal calendar shifts slightly.
Fixtures Update: Due to the upcoming mid-year exam and assessment periods at various opposing schools, formal competitive sports matches will start coming to an end from the second week of June.
Does sport stop? Absolutely not!
While the Saturday and mid-week match days will wind down, our commitment to physical literacy and teamwork stays in high gear. Sports practices will go ahead exactly as planned. We will be utilizing this uninterrupted field time to focus heavily on foundational skills, fitness, and internal fun matches. It’s the perfect opportunity for our players to sharpen their skills without the pressure of a scoreboard.
Matches are where we show what we’ve learned, but practices are where champions are made. As we transition into a block of focused training sessions, bring that same match-day energy to every single practice. Keep packing those kits, dress warmly for the winter chill, and let’s finish this term's sporting cycle stronger, faster, and more skilled than ever before!
See you on the sidelines tomorrow at 10h00!

Grade 3 parents: A reminder that if you have signed your child up for hockey, learners must be dropped at the Astro at the Secondary Faculty by 07:30 every Friday where teachers and coaches will be to welcome them. Learners who have not signed up for hockey may not arrive at the Astro, as coaches and buses are booked according to the sign-up sheet.
Here are a few important reminders specifically for hockey:
Clothing: As the weather can be unpredictable, please pack a change of PE clothes and white socks for after practice.
Transport & School Day: Learners’ school bags will be kept safe and dry. School buses will transport them back to the Junior Preparatory, where they will begin their school day at 09:00.
Matches: Boys' and girls' hockey matches take place on Thursday afternoons on either grass or AstroTurf. You will receive an email if your child has been selected to play.
Required Equipment for all practices and matches: All hockey players must have a gum guard, shinpads, and a hockey stick. If learners do not have their kit for practice, they will not be selected for matches.
If your Grade 3 child has been signed up for rugby or netball ONLY, these practices are at 07:30 on the Junior Preparatory campus. Rugby boys must have gum guards for every session.
This is a reminder to check that your child has the correct items for hockey and rugby that will take place this quarter and next quarter.

Monday the 1st of June is International Children's Day. It is a commemorative date celebrated annually in honour of children and their rights. In 1925, International Children’s Day was first proclaimed in Geneva during the World Conference on Child Welfare. Since 1950, it is celebrated on 1 June annually. This is a very important and special day, as we take time to acknowledge the importance of our children and their rights.
We have an upcoming week of celebrating many staff birthdays! We wish Chef Kerry a happy birthday on the 1st of June and Mrs Crouse on the 4th of June.
We also look forward to welcoming everyone to our Open Day tomorrow. All are warmly welcome to attend.
Wishing all our Parklands families a wonderful weekend.
