Junior Preparatory Weekly Memo
8 May 2026
8 May 2026
Please remember that all Junior Preparatory learners must now be wearing their winter uniform. Please clearly label each and every item with your child's name.Â
A reminder that hair accessories are to be black, white or navy. 🧤 Gloves and scarves are to be navy, only.Â
A HEALTHY SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT
With the change in season and colder weather, we see an increase in illnesses. Any child who is unwell or taking antibiotics must stay at home. We appreciate that this can be challenging for working parents, but preventing the spread of infection to other learners and our teachers remains our priority.
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY
Sunday is Mother's Day and we hope all the mother figures in our children's lives have a special day. Some of our learners took the opportunity to draw pictures of all their favourite women in their lives.Â
PARKLANDS COLLEGE PARENT OFFER WITH KLIKD FOR A DIGITAL SAFETY SOLUTION
Parenting in the digital age presents unique challenges. Balancing your child’s need for online interaction with the responsibility of keeping them safe can feel overwhelming. Excluding your child from the digital world might seem isolating, yet providing them with unrestricted access to smart devices without guidance can pose serious risks.
It is vital to equip our children with the skills they need to navigate the digital world confidently, responsibly, and safely.Â
About Klikd
Klikd was founded by clinical psychologist Pam Tudin and social media lawyer Sarah Hoffman, combining their expertise to offer an innovative approach to cyber safety and digital citizenship education.
In today’s world, knowing how to handle challenges such as cyberbullying, gaming addiction, inappropriate content, online predators, managing one’s digital footprint and Artificial Intelligence - is no longer optional -it's essential. These aren’t skills that can be taught in a single school talk but require continuous conversations and guidance, reinforced at school and at home.
The Klikd Digital Citizenship Programme for Schools
Through our partnership with Klikd, you as parents can join a WhatsApp group and be armed with weekly, practical resources and strategies to support your child.

LIBRARY NEWS
Star Wars Day
May the Fourth has become a celebration for devoted fans of one of the great stories of our time, perpetuated in the ever-expanding Star Wars universe. New spin-off series and characters continue in popularity, based in the world of the original Star Wars created by George Lucas, with Episode 4: A New Hope released for the first time in 1977.
This week we had fun introducing “a galaxy far, far away” to a new generation of readers and movie boffins. Learners met the iconic characters of A New Hope and designed a new look for R2-D2. Book Clubbers played a tense board game, pursued by Tuscan raiders and Jawas, trying to assist R2-D2 in finding Ben Kenobi, to deliver Princess Leia’s desperate message.Â
Birthday Books
Cade donated two fascinating Birthday Books that are going to be much loved and enjoyed. There is After The Fall, in case you have ever wondered what happened when Humpty Dumpty got up again, as well as the beloved Mr. Bump, who lost his memory after a particularly nasty bump. Thank you and happy birthday, Cade!

Did you know? Some studies have shown that wearing slippers can increase productivity! And that might not be their only benefit. Slippers can also make meetings feel shorter, improve the taste of broccoli, and make your boss up to 15% less bossy… right?
Da Vinci doodled in his slippers. Edison wore stokies when he came up with his brightest ideas.
We can’t prove these fuzzy facts. But we can promise that when you buy your R20 sticker and don your slippers or 'pantoffels' to show your support on Slipper Day, you really do help us make dreams come true for children with life-threatening illnesses. We fulfil over six dreams a day, every day of the year.
Slipper Day empowers us to continue on this critical mission.Â
 And that’s a fact!
Learners can arrive in their PE clothes and enjoy a day of wearing slippers. All learners wearing slippers will be billed R20 to support this wonderful initiative.Â
CAKE SALES
Cake sale money is used to support various outreach projects.
We request that items such as cupcakes, popcorn, crisps, muffins, etc. are sent in by the classes that are hosting the cake sale. Please ensure that items donated for cake sales do not contain nuts. We love healthy goodies, especially popcorn!
Please send R10 to school for your child to enjoy two treats from cakesale.
If you are able to assist at your class cake sale from 09h40, please notify your child’s class teacher.

HEADS-UP: QUARTER 2 DATES
Please read through the Parent and Learner Directory, which includes important information about Parklands College and the Junior Preparatory learners.
The long weekends are officially behind us, and we are diving headfirst into May! The energy on the fields this week has been nothing short of electric as our Junior Prep athletes returned to a full schedule of action-packed sports.
Rugby: A Thriller for the U9s
History was made this week as our U9 Rugby team took to the field for their first-ever match! It was a game that had everything: skill, speed, and plenty of heart.
The Result: A nail-biting 4-4 draw against Blouberg International.
The Highlights: Xhanti was unstoppable, scoring an incredible quadruple (four tries!). It looked like we had the win in the bag, but Blouberg managed to score in the final moments of the game to tie it up. What a way to start the season!
Netball vs. Elkanah
Our netballers showed fantastic composure and skill against Elkanah, walking away with some excellent results.
U9A: Won 9-0. A dominant display of shooting and defensive pressure. Feranmi (POTM)
U9B: Drew 2-2. A very evenly matched and exciting game from start to finish. Christabel (POTM)
Hockey: Building Skills
Our hockey players continue to show great development on the Astro:
U9 Boys: The boys engaged in a high-energy internal game, allowing coaches to see their progress in a match-like environment. The improvement in stick-handling is clear to see!
U9 Girls: It was a tough outing for our girls, resulting in a 2-0 loss. Despite the score, the team defended bravely and never stopped chasing the ball.
Player of the Match (POTM): Mini for her fantastic work rate and positioning.
Now that the holidays are over, we are shifting into high gear. Next week is going to be massive, with all three of our major winter codes on full display:
Hockey
RugbyÂ
Netball
Make sure those kits are clean and your spirits are high—we want to see the sidelines packed with supporters as our young stars continue to shine!
"It’s not whether you get knocked down; it’s whether you get up." To our U9 Rugby boys who fought until the final whistle, and our Hockey girls who played their hearts out despite the loss: We are so proud of you. Sports are about more than just winning; they are about learning how to keep going when the game is tough. Keep showing up, keep practising your drills, and keep supporting your teammates. The hard work you put in during the week is what makes those Saturday highlights possible!
Grade 3 parents: A reminder that if you have signed your child up for hockey, learners must be dropped at the Astro at the Secondary Faculty by 07:30 every Friday where teachers and coaches will be to welcome them. Learners who have not signed up for hockey may not arrive at the Astro, as coaches and buses are booked according to the sign-up sheet. Â
Here are a few important reminders specifically for hockey:
Clothing: As the weather can be unpredictable, please pack a change of PE clothes and white socks for after practice.
Transport & School Day: Learners’ school bags will be kept safe and dry. School buses will transport them back to the Junior Preparatory, where they will begin their school day at 09:00.Â
Matches: Boys' and girls' hockey matches take place on Thursday afternoons on either grass or AstroTurf. You will receive an email if your child has been selected to play.
Required Equipment for all practices and matches: All hockey players must have a gum guard, shinpads, and a hockey stick. If learners do not have their kit for practice, they will not be selected for matches.Â
If your Grade 3 child has been signed up for rugby or netball ONLY, these practices are at 07:30 on the Junior Preparatory campus. Rugby boys must have gum guards for every session.Â
This is a reminder to check that your child has the correct items for hockey and rugby that will take place this quarter and next quarter.Â
