Junior Preparatory Weekly Memo
19 June 2026
19 June 2026
Dear Parents,
Despite the short week, the last few days have been filled with exciting outings and memorable events, bringing the second quarter to a wonderful and energetic close.
Celebrating Father's Day with a Giggle
This Father's Day, we're celebrating the dads and father figures who fill our lives with love, laughter, and of course, plenty of dad jokes! Enjoy these heartwarming videos of the learners sharing some of the funniest jokes their fathers have told them.
We honour all dads, grandfathers, stepdads, uncles, mentors, and father figures who make a difference every day. Wishing all fathers and father figures a very special Father's Day filled with joy and cherished moments with loved ones.
An Evening of Musical Delight
On Tuesday evening, learners delighted the audience with their musical talents. We are so proud of their efforts and hours of practice dedicated to their performance. A big thank you to all the music educators for all their effort in putting together such a lovely evening.
Grade 2 & 3 Orchestral Ensemble: The Bare Necessities - Bruce
Grade 2 & 3 Orchestral Ensemble: I Got a Feeling - Black Eyed Peas
Junior Preparatory Choir: Edelweiss
Junior Preparatory Choir: Kaapse Klanke
Grade 1 Orchestral Ensemble: If You're Happy and You Know It
Grade 3 Marimba: Despacito
Grade 2 Animal Habitats
Grade 2 learners proudly hosted their Project-Based Learning (PBL) showcase, inviting parents to step into their classrooms and explore the fascinating world of animal habitats.
After weeks of research, creativity, and hands-on learning, each learner presented a unique animal habitat project, complete with a hand-sculpted clay animal and a carefully constructed box diorama depicting its natural environment. Parents had the opportunity to view the projects, listen to their children share their learning journeys, and celebrate the learners’ hard work and imagination.
Grade 3 Outing to Kirstenbosch
As part of our Life Skills programme, the Grade Three learners went to Kirstenbosch on an outing. There was great excitement as the learners boarded the bus. We spent a lot of time exploring the gardens and learning all about the different plants and their uses. The highlight was definitely our picnic in the beautiful gardens surrounded by the majestic mountains.

Birthday Books
Once again we received beautiful Birthday Books this week.
Elijah is sharing a fun interactive book, Stories of Jesus, where the reader gets to turn a circle to find the correct picture for each part of every story.
Ahlumile donated Here We Are by author Oliver Jeffers, in which the author introduces his newborn son to our planet. Happy birthday, boys, and thank you for these interesting books for our library.
Robotics: Pac-Man Fever Hits the JP!
There was a retro buzz in JP Robotics this week as our Grade 3 learners coded their very own Pac-Man style games - designing mazes, dodging ghosts, and chasing high scores, one block of code at a time.
The highlight? One of our Grade 3 girls proudly demonstrated her game to a group of wide-eyed Grade 1s, who couldn't wait to see what they'll be able to create one day. Our Grade 2s also got in on the action, testing out a Pac-Man style game of their own.

ACADEMICS
Throughout the quarter, our Junior Prep learners continue with their formal and informal assessments. These are carefully integrated into the school day, ensuring your child feels supported and comfortable in their familiar classroom environment.
For a learner to successfully progress to the next grade, the Department of Education requires the following averages throughout the year:
Home Language: English - Code 4
Mathematics - Code 3
First Additional Language: Afrikaans/isiXhosa - Code 3
Regular attendance is equally important for academic growth. As per Department guidelines, a medical certificate is required for any absence of two days or more.

Nelson Mandela Day
On Friday 24th July, the Junior Preparatory will be honouring 67 Minutes for Mandela Day through a hands-on initiative, where learners will work together to prepare sandwiches to donate to those in need in our community. Our aim is to reach 670 sandwiches, celebrating Nelson Mandela’s legacy of kindness, compassion, and service to others.
To support this initiative, learners are invited to contribute by bringing loaves of bread, spreads, paper plates, plastic knives, and tin foil. These items will be used during the 67-minute activity to prepare and pack sandwiches for distribution.
Class teachers will be in touch with further details regarding the specific quantities required per class.
Thank you to our families for supporting this meaningful initiative and helping us spread kindness throughout our community.

Learners who have not signed up for hockey may not arrive at the Astro, as coaches and buses are booked according to the sign-up sheet.
Here are a few important reminders specifically for hockey:

Dear Parklands College Teachers, Parents, and Learners
As I prepare to leave at the end of this quarter and begin a new teaching adventure in China, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to each of you. Teaching has always been more than a profession to me, it is a passion, and it has been a privilege to be part of this wonderful community. I hope that, in some small way, I have made a positive difference in the lives of the learners I have taught and the families I have met along the way.
Thank you for the support, encouragement, and memories that I will carry with me into this next chapter. I leave with a full heart and deep appreciation for the relationships and experiences that have shaped me.
“The greatest legacy we can leave is kindness, carried forward in the lives we touch.”
With gratitude and best wishes,
Mrs Duke
We honour all dads, grandfathers, stepdads, uncles, mentors, and father figures who make a difference every day. Wishing all fathers and father figures a very special Father's Day filled with joy and cherished moments with loved ones.
